  • You can print your certificate of completion immediately after completing a course or request for a certificate to be sent to you by mail.

  • Courses require reading a book or selected chapter from a book. I recommend using the public library. Go to our bookstore  if you would like to order a copy of the book. 

  • Danny is an approved provider of continuing education for RNs. Provider #: WV 2007-0520RN. The National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) does not pre-approve any continuing education activities at this time. NCTRC has published a handout on ways you can earn continuing education.

Independent learner will be able to demonstrate awareness of concepts of creativity and how it can be developed as evidenced by scoring at least a70% score or higher on a 10-question quiz on Ken Robinson’s book Out of our minds: learning to be creative within a one-year time period.

Social Psychology of Likeability: Techniques to Improve Quality of Life

  • TR Knowledge Area:  Social psychological aspects of play, recreation and leisure 

Five (5) Clock Hours OR (0.5) CEUs. Notice ten (10) Clock Hours = 1.0 CEU

  • Course Objective: 

Participant will increase awareness of Tim Sanders (2005) the likeability factor and how the development of social skills can improve social support and the quality of life.

  • Course Requirements:

    Participate will read Sanders (2005) The Likeability Factor: How to Boost Your L-Factor and Achieve Your Life’s Dreams and demonstrate an awareness and understanding of how ideas and concepts can be used for improve quality of life by scoring at least a 70% or better score before the end of the one-year course timeframe.

Treating Depression: Techniques for Promoting Happiness 

  • TR Knowledge Area: Foundation Knowledge: Psychology and Related Impairments

Five (5) Clock Hours OR (0.5) CEUs. Notice ten (10) Clock Hours = 1.0 CEU

  • Course Goal: 

Participant to increase awareness of techniques for treating depression and promoting happiness.

  • Course Objective: 

Participant will be able to identify techniques for treating depression and promoting happiness as evidenced by scoring at least a 70% score or better on a 10-question multiple-choice exam based on a required reading before the end of a one-year timeframe. Participant can re-take exam if needed.

  • Course Requirements: 

Read the book: Shimoff and Cline (2007) Happy for No Reason: 7 Steps to Becoming Happy From the Inside Out. Pass the 10-question multiple-choice exam with a 70% or better within one-year of registration.

Helping Techniques: Making a Difference Through Serving Others

To increase awareness of helping techniques as well as skills and abilities

  • Course Objective:

Therapeutic Outcomes of Journaling 

  • TR Knowledge: Implementing the Individual Intervention Plan: Stress Management: Journaling

  • Course Goal:

This course is intended to improve the participant’s master of implementing journaling when appropriate for an individualized intervention plan. The focus will be on the stress management and overall health outcomes through the use of journaling.

Read Pennebaker (1997) Opening up: the healing power of expressing emotions. Take an exam online. You have one year to complete. You can re-take exam if needed until correct.

Effective Communication Techniques for Dealing with People’s Difficult Behavior

  • TR Knowledge Area: Foundation Knowledge: Theories of Human Behavior and Behavior Change

Five (5) Clock Hours OR (0.5) CEUs. Notice ten (10) Clock Hours = 1.0 CEU

  • Course Goal: 

Increase awareness of communication skills needed to deal with people’s difficult behavior in order to bring about a more positive outcome for all people involved.

  • Course Objective:

Therapeutic Outcomes for Using Dogs as a Pet Therapy Approach

  • TR Knowledge Area: Practice of TR/ RT: Facilitation Techniques and Approaches

Five (5) Clock Hours OR (0.5) CEUs. Notice ten (10) Clock Hours = 1.0 CEU

  • Course Goal: 

Participant to increase awareness of the benefits of using dogs as an approach in pet therapy programs.

  • Course Objective: 

Participant will be able to identify the benefits of using dogs as a facilitation technique as evidenced by scoring at least a 70% score or better on a 10-question multiple-exam test based on required reading before the end of a one-year timeframe. Participant can re-take exam if needed.

  • Course Requirements: 

Read Saskon (2007) Paws and Effects: The Healing Benefits of Dogs. Pass the 10-question multiple-choice exam with a 70% or better within one-year of registration.

Writing Functional Outcome Goals in Recreation Therapy   

  • TR Knowledge Area: Planning the Intervention: Methods of writing measurable goals and behavioral objectives 

Three (3) Clock Hours OR (0.3) CEUs. Notice ten (10) Clock Hours = 1.0 CEU

  • Course Goal:

The course is intended to improve the participant’s master of writing measurable and functional treatment goals. The focus will be on writing functional outcome goals for recreational therapy and or related healthcare disciplines that will enhance those basic skills that practitioners use.

  • Course Objective:

Participant will be able to identify the rationale and importance for writing measurable goals in healthcare, will be able to list the key components to writing S.M.A.R.T. goals, and will be able to identify a correct goals as evidenced by scoring at least a 70% or greater on course exam before end of course timeframe. Note: Text not included in course cost. Go to bookstore to see which text is required for course. This information is also included in the course outline. 

  • Course Requirements: 

Read Hogberg, P. & Johnson, M. (1994). Reference Manual for writing rehabilitation therapy treatment plans. Venture Publishing: State College, PA. Read three online articles. These articles require no additional cost.  Take an exam online. You have one year to complete.  You can re-take exam if needed.

Using Person Centered Therapy  

  • TR Knowledge Area: Person Centered Therapy  

  Five (5) Clock Hours OR (0.5) CEUs. Notice ten (10) Clock Hours = 1.0 CEU

  • Course Goal:

To understand the concepts needed for using person centered therapy   

  • Course Objective:

The student will demonstrate awareness of person centered therapy approaches as evidenced by scoring at least a 70% or higher on the course examination before the end of the course.  

  • Course Requirements:

Read two chapters from a book:  Rogers (1977) On Personal Power. Watch a two-hour movie: Good Will Hunting (1998). Take an exam online. You have one year to complete.  You can re-take exam if needed.
